A record-breaking 54 submissions were submitted to the 2004 SideWrite short scriptwriting competition, which challenged Alabama screenwriters to write a 15-page short film script. Thanks to everyone who submitted a script!

Big Fish author Daniel Wallace and screenwriter John August read the finalists and determined the Grand Prize winner. Finalists which chose to compete for the "Production Prize" were eligible to have their script produced by Hunter Films (co-producers of 2003 Oscar nominated short, JOHNNY FLYNTON) and screened at the 2005 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. Winners were announced by Daniel Wallace and Alan Hunter at the 2004 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival's opening night festivities on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at the Alabama Theatre.

Daniel Wallace is the author of three novels, Big Fish (1998), Ray in Reverse (2000) and The Watermelon King (2003). His stories have been published far and wide in many magazines and anthologies, including The Yale Review, The Massachusetts Review , Shenandoah and Glimmer Train , and his illustrated work has appeared in the L.A. Times and Italian Vanity Fair .

John August is the screenwriter of Tim Burton's adaptation of Big Fish. He wrote and co-produced the critically acclaimed Go, which debuted at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, and co-wrote Titan AE, Charlie's Angels, and Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle. His most recent project is the upcoming Tim Burton remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
